ABOUT THE GAME / PHRASE
One in a Krillion: meaning and where it comes from
“One in a krillion” plays on “one in a million” and means something incredibly rare. In the Krillion game it is the dream outcome: an answer so rare it feels like one in a krillion.
What does “one in a krillion” mean?
The phrase exaggerates “one in a million” and even “one in a billion”: if a million is common, a krillion means something vanishingly rare. People use it for a result that seems almost impossible — like an answer almost nobody else gave.
Where the name comes from
The title traces to One in a Krillion, a student game made at DigiPen in 2024. The project later became the basis for the daily browser game now at krillion.io, which keeps the phrase as its identity: the game's tagline is literally “One in a krillion.”
How the phrase is used in the game
In Krillion, scoring rewards rarity, so the most unusual valid answers are the closest thing to “one in a krillion.” When a player submits an answer almost nobody else typed, the depth it grants matches the phrase. It also appears on Steam as a playable version of the original student game.
Is it an official phrase?
The phrase and game name are used by the independent developer of krillion.io; this guide is not affiliated. We simply explain the meaning and history for people who encounter the term.
